Veteran Winnipeg broadcaster Larry Updike is leaving his job at Siloam Mission and heading back behind the microphone. He has been hired to host CBC Radio’s afternoon program.

"It was an opportunity that arose and I decided to pursue it," he said this morning. "My time at Siloam was for a season and a reason. No one is indispensable. We work very much as a team here."

After leaving his long-time job at CJOB last summer, Updike became a senior spokesman for the mission.

Updike said the radio bug never really left him.

"This was a chance to do something I love. It was really an honor to be (at Siloam). I would like to think that I contributed, that I helped raise awareness."

Asked if the financial benefits were part of his move, Updike paused. "I was offered a very generous package from CBC," he said.

Updike will host CBC’s Up To Speed show, replacing  Margaux Watt.
