Vehicle registration could support rapid transit: councillor

A Winnipeg city councillor wants the province to help fund rapid transit with increased revenue from vehicle registration fees.

The province recently announced it will hike motor vehicle registration fees by $35 to help pay for roads and infrastructure.

Coun. Justin Swandel (St. Norbert) announced that he will bring forward a motion at Wednesday's city council meeting that calls on the province to dedicate the additional funds to municipalities to put toward sustainable infrastructure, including rapid transit.

Winnipeg's master transportation plan calls for the second phase of the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor to be complete by 2016. Currently, the city has not found a way to finance its share of the project.

In March, council voted to rescind a 20-cent transit fare increase to raise $6 million a year toward the second phase of the rapid-transit corridor.

Swandel's motion said that Winnipeg should dedicate its portion of the vehicle registration revenue to build the second phase of the rapid-transit corridor. However, the motion says the provincial dollars would not flow until 2016 to help the province deal with its short-term deficit.
