Veteran Schneider joins Moose

The Vancouver Canucks today assigned veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider to the Manitoba Moose, confirming a move reported in Saturday's edition of the Free Press.

The 40-year-old New York native, who has played 1,281 regular-season NHL games in his career, cleared waivers last week.

He joins the Moose in time for Monday's practice.

Schneider, on a one-way, $1.55 million contract this season, played 17 games for the Canucks before a falling-out that saw him leave the club Dec. 18.

When Vancouver recalled defenceman Brad Lukowich from the Texas Stars this weekend, a roster move was required to make room for him on the 23-man list, and Schneider's assignment to the Moose was it.

Schneider's first game with Manitoba could be Friday night, when the Hershey Bears visit MTS Centre.
