Veterans' plates now available for motorcycles
The province will offer a specially designed motorcycle licence plate for veterans beginning next year.
Premier Greg Selinger announced the new plate along with Rick Bennett, president of the Manitoba-Northwestern Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, at a brief ceremony this afternoon at the Legislative Building.
The licence plate will display the symbolic red poppy, which has become the lasting memorial symbol to fallen soldiers.
The province first issued veteran’s plates for automobiles in 2004.
"The veteran speciality licence plate pays homage to our veterans and peacekeepers for their dedication, bravery and sacrifices they have made," Selinger said.
Provincial officials said they had no idea how many veterans may wish to acquire the plate. But they said they had received several requests from vets.
As with the current veteran passenger vehicle specialty plate, applicants can either submit their applications to the Royal Canadian Legion for approval or apply to Manitoba Public Insurance, Vehicle Registration -- Licensing Services.
Applicants must provide a completed veteran licence plate application form with documentation proving the applicant meets the qualifications for a veteran licence plate. Applicants must also include a $5 application fee made payable to Manitoba Public Insurance.
Those eligible for a veterans motorcycle licence plate are:
- people who served in the First World War, Second World War or the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces or an allied force, or in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command;
- people who served at least three years in the Canadian Forces, NATO operations or a United Nations peacekeeping force as a member of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, another Canadian police force or an allied force; and
- people who are active members of the Canadian Forces and who have honourably served in the Forces for at least three years.
