Waste collector Emterra catching up with pickups: city

A City of Winnipeg official says a private waste collector is on track to catch up with garbage and recycling pickups.

Last week, the city said Emterra's crews were between a half day and full day behind the collection schedule.

City of Winnipeg officials said they would hire additional crews and charge Emterra if the situation was not resolved by 6 p.m today.

This morning, City of Winnipeg spokeswoman Tammy Melesko said in an email statement crews are focusing on pickup in pockets of St. Vital and Fort Richmond. She said crews are on track to completing collection today.

Last week, some residents had complained they hadn't had garbage collection in two weeks. Mayor Sam Katz said the new waste collector should suffer financial penalties if service problems persist beyond the period stipulated in their contract.

On Oct. 1, 165,000 single-family homes switched to automated garbage and recycling carts from manual collection.

Since the changeover, the city's 311 hotline has received about 5,000 calls about the new garbage and recycling system.
