Wesmen's Kleysen named rookie of the year

Guard Stephanie Kleysen of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen has been named the Canada West conference rookie of the year for women’s basketball.

The conference announced the individual award winners and all-stars for the 2010-2011 season on Thursday.

Kleysen, a graduate of Winnipeg’s Vincent Massey Collegiate, was the conference leader in rebounds (9.5 per game). She registered six double-doubles, averaged 8.9 points per game and twice hauled in 17 rebounds in a single game.

Named to the first all-star team was Caitlin Gooch of the Wesmen while the second all-star team included Amy Ogidan of the Wesmen and Debbie Yeboah of Winnipeg, who plays for Victoria Vikes.

The 5-foot-9 Kleysen helped the Wesmen post a 20-4 regular season wins-losses record, second place in the conference standings and a CIS No. 9 ranking.

"Stephanie is very deserving of this award. She works hard, challenges herself to improve and is a great team player," Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay said in a release. "To lead Canada West in rebounding as a freshman is a huge individual achievement. She played a big role in our program improving from last season."
