Police taped off a house in the 200 block of Toronto Street early this morning after a man was found at the location suffering from stab wounds. The man is listed in critical condition.

Residents of a quiet West End street were caught by surprise this morning when the neighbourhood was swarmed by police, paramedics and firefighters.

The emergency crews were responding to the report of an assault in the 200 block of Toronto St. at around 2 a.m. What they found was a 21-year-old man in front a small house at 267 Toronto St., suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The man was taken from the scene in critical condition.

"I couldn’t tell who it was but the paramedics were giving him CPR," said a woman who lives across the street.

The woman said others she spoke to on the street said the victim’s attacker had fled the scene on foot, wearing a blue jumper and still carrying the knife with him.

"No one heard anything," said a man who was visiting a friend who lives two doors from the assault scene. "I came outside for a cigarette and saw all the flashing lights, cops and paramedics.

"People up and down the street came out to see what was going on."

The woman said a young family had moved into 267 Toronto St. about four or five months ago.

"I don’t know them but the police have been there about twice a week since they moved in," the woman said. "I don’t know why."

Yellow police tape still surrounded the front yard of 267 Toronto St. this afternoon, where a police cruiser with two officers remains parked in front of the home.

The woman said police placed three individuals in police cruisers while she watched the scene this morning.

There’s been no update on the condition of the victim.

Winnipeg Police said the incident remains under investigation.
