Wholesale sales decline in Manitoba

WINNIPEG — Manitoba saw the biggest provincial decline in wholesale sales in the country in July, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that Manitoba’s wholesalers shipped out just under $1.30 billion worth of goods during the month. That was a decline of 3.1 per cent from June’s total of $1.34 billion, and was the third consecutive month of weaker sales for the industry.

Manitoba was one of six provinces to record a drop in wholesale sales for the month. New Brunswick had the second biggest percentage decline at 2.1 per cent, while Prince Edward Island had the biggest percentage increase, at 3.1 per cent.

Despite three consecutive months of declining sales, Manitoba’s July total was still a 1.9 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when local wholesalers reported $1.27 billion worth of sales.

Nationally, wholesale sales fell 0.6 per cent to $49.5 billion in July. That followed a 0.3 per cent decline in June.

Statistics Canada said five of the industry’s seven subsectors, representing 85 per cent of total sales, reported declines for the month.
