Organizers of the 2013 Winnipeg Wine Festival have reason to raise a glass and toast their successes.
The 12th instalment of the festival raised $395,000 for Special Olympics Manitoba this year, over $95,000 more than last year, according to a press release sent today. Since its inception, the Winnipeg Wine Festival has raised over $2.5 million for Special Olympics Manitoba.
Attendance at the weekend public tastings, including the Friday and Saturday night events and the Saturday matinee held May 3-4, topped 7,600, a 17 per cent increase from 2012. Overall attendance including the ancillary events leading up to the public tastings was over 9,300.
"As the presenting sponsor of the Winnipeg Wine Festival, we couldn’t be more pleased with its success and growth," said Peter Kenyon, Chief Operating Officer for Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, in the release.
The Winnipeg Wine Festival also announced the theme region for the 2014 festival will be Australia. This will be the second time the country will be the featured region — the first was in 2010. "Wine Australia and their wineries have been long-time supporters of our festival and we look forward to featuring their wines and exciting varietals at next year’s event," said Winnipeg Wine Festival General Manager Terry Hopkinson in the press release.
The theme regions for 2013 were New Zealand and Argentina.
