Winkler man drowns when ATV crashes through ice

WINNIPEG -- A 54-year-old man from Winkler drowned Monday when the ATV he was riding went through the ice on Cedar Lake near Grand Rapids.

He and another man were ice fishing around noon when the accident occurred.

The second man was able to reach shore and got help. Emergency crews reached the scene by boat and recovered the body of the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The name of the deceased will not be released, RCMP said.

RCMP warn that the ice conditions are unsafe for travel, and operating any vehicle on the ice at this time is not recommended.
