Winnipeg Arts Council head renews contract

The head of the Winnipeg Arts Council has signed on for five more years.

Carol A. Phillips, executive director of the council since 2006, has renewed her contract to fund and foster development of the arts on behalf of the citizens of Winnipeg, according to a release.

Phillips, who was previously director of the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, was instrumental in bringing to Winnipeg in 2010 the federal designation of Cultural Capital of Canada and, along with it, $4 million of innovative programming and events.

She will be joined on the arts council, an arm’s-length agency of the City of Winnipeg, by two new board members: singer/songwriter Christine Fellows and Mary Reid, director/curator of the University of Manitoba School of Art Gallery.
