Winnipeg 'Dorothy' contender makes cut in Wizard of Oz auditions

Colleen Furlan is over the moon... which is all very nice, of course, but where the young Winnipeg singer really wants to be is over the rainbow.

And she has a chance to get there, too — Furlan is one of 20 prospective Dorothys chosen after nationwide auditions for the upcoming CBC reality/competition series Over the Rainbow, which will choose the star for the Toronto production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage-musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.

During the summer, Furlan — a 19-year-old student in the University of Manitoba’s faculty of music — and 19 other wannabe Dorothys will take part in a musical-theatre boot camp in Toronto, polishing their performing skills and competing for a spot in Over the Rainbow’s Top 10.

Those finalists will take part in the live, viewer-voted, weekly CBC series, premiering this fall, which will end with the naming of Canada’s new Dorothy.

The Wizard of Oz is scheduled to open at Toronto’s Ed Mirvish Theatre in December.
