Winnipeg Saints headed to Virden

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has just one remaining Winnipeg team - the Winnipeg Blues - as the move of the Winnipeg Saints to Virden was made official at a press conference in Virden on Wednesday.

A group called Virden Hockey Ventures Inc. will put an MJHL team on the ice this fall in the new Virden and Area Recreation Facility which has a 1,200-seat arena with an NHL-size ice surface, 500-seat community hall, meeting rooms, office space, indoor walking track, fitness centre and food services.

Troy Leslie, who coached the Southwest Cougars of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League to the championship final last season, has been named the team’s head coach.

"We have a class-A facility, a very good board of directors and a committed ownership group ready to hit the ground running," Dale Lewis, the Virden team’s president said in a press release. "Westman is a thriving, hockey-loving area that is ready to be host to a junior A team and we are thrilled to have made this a reality."

The team’s name has yet to be announced.
