Winnipeg and Manitoba lead country in homicide rates
Winnipeg and Manitoba had the country’s highest rate of homicides for metropolitan areas and provinces for 2011.
Winnipeg reported 39 homicides in 2011 — actually two more homicides from that year were discovered by police earlier this year after the statistics were compiled — while the province had 53 homicides, according to the report released by Statistics Canada today.

The homicide rate in Winnipeg was 5.08 per 100,000 people, up from a rate of 2.82 in 2010 with 22 homicides. The city with the next highest homicide rate was Halifax with 4.41 per 100,000 people with 18 homicides.
The homicide rate in Manitoba was 4.24 per 100,000 people, up from 3.65 per 100,000 in 2010 based on 45 homicides. The national average was 1.73 per 100,000 people, with 598 homicides, in 2011
It marks the fifth straight year that Manitoba has reported the highest homicide rate.
