Winnipeg first Canadian city to host GLBT Jews conference
Winnipeg will fly an international rainbow flag this summer when it hosts the 21st World Conference of GLBT Jews, the first Canadian city to do so.
The conference, which runs July 5-7 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, is presented by the World Congress of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Jews, which has around 50 member organizations in Argentina, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as Canada.
The vision of the organization is to "nurture an environment where Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Jews worldwide can enjoy free and fulfilling lives," according to a news release.
The Hebrew subtitle, Keshet Ga’avah (Rainbow of Pride) emphasizes the importance of Hebrew and Israel to the world congress.
According to the release, the local organizing committee recognized that Winnipeg, as home of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, is "bashert" (Yiddish for "meant to be") as the place to celebrate diversity.
The conference, expected to draw up to 200 attendees, will feature keynote speakers Joy Ladin (Through the Door of Life), Jay Michaelson (God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality) and Leslea Newman (Heather Has Two Mommies, A Letter to Harvey Milk).
