Winnipeg's 35th homicide victim makes record number of homicides in a year

Winnipeg has set a new record for homicides in a year.

The Winnipeg Police Service will hold a press conference later this morning to discuss details of the city’s 35th homicide.

The male victim was found during a fire in a downtown apartment building early Saturday morning. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. Police initially said his injuries did not appear to be fire-related.

"Thirty-five is our new high, unfortunately," said Const. Jason Michalyshen. "There’s nothing good we can say about the high numbers. As a service, we are committed to dealing with these circumstances."

The previous record for the city’s homicide total was set in 2004.
