A Winnipeg man was killed Sunday afternoon in North Dakota when he was struck by a semi while standing on Interstate 29 near Pembina, just moments after being involved in a collision.
John Goertz, 53, was driving his 2009 Chevrolet Uplander SUV when he was involved in a crash. He got out of his vehicle to check on the other people involved in the crash when he was struck by a passing semi and later died in the hospital.
Four other people, all from the U.S., also suffered injuries at the time of the chain reaction of crashes.
The North Dakota highway patrol reported blizzard-like conditions Sunday afternoon, noting about three dozen cars hit the ditch on I-29 between the Grand Forks area and the Canadian border.
