Winnipeg man gets 100-month sentence for 'sadistic' attack
A Winnipeg man has been sentenced to 100 months in prison for a violent, prolonged attack against his ex-girlfriend that involved using a number of weapons and methods to inflict serious injury.
Allan Wishlow was hoping to be released from custody on Wednesday with a sentence of time already served. Instead, he was given four-and-a-half more years behind bars, in addition to the equivalent of three years and 10 months of pre-trial custody.
"This was a brutal and prolonged assault. It was sadistic," said Queen’s Bench Justice Brenda Keyser.
Wishlow has refused to take responsibility and claims someone else must have been responsible for the August 2009 incident, which initially left the victim in critical condition. Keyser rejected his story following a trial, saying there is plenty of evidence pointing directly at him.
Wishlow was found guilty of multiple charges, including aggravated assault, assault, mischief and breaching several court orders.
The victim described during the trial that Wishlow became enraged because she began dating another man. He grabbed her out of bed one night around 3 a.m. and began an attack that lasted several hours.
The woman told court she was punched in the face, kicked in the stomach, slammed into a stucco wall and held underwater for a short time. She said Wishlow then sliced her wrists, threatened to cut off a toe, urinated on her and claimed he was going to douse her in gasoline and set her ablaze.
Keyser said the victim's story was credible, the injuries couldn't be disputed and pointed to DNA evidence at the scene that included Wishlow's blood, not to mention several cuts and bruises found on his hands.
