Winnipeg police officer charged with assault

A 44-year-old Winnipeg police officer has been charged with assault in connection with a domestic dispute last week.

Officers from a detachment in the East District responded to a home last Monday morning where the officer and his wife lived, RCMP said in a release issued today.

Police said they were responding to a disturbance at the home. The officer's wife alleged she had been assaulted the night before, RCMP said. She did not require medical assistance.

The police officer was arrested and released on a promise to appear, before he was charged today with assault. He is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in February.

Police said the officer was not on duty when the incident happened.

The RCMP did not release the officer’s name to protect the identity of his wife.
