Winnipeg police officer charged with assault

WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg police officer has been charged with assault in connection with an incident in December 2009.

Const. Joseph McKenzie, 34, was charged with asssault Thursday, following an investigation by Winnipeg Police which was forwarded to Manitoba Justice and reviewed by independent counsel, police said Friday afternoon.

Police released no details of the incident, other than noting the officer was off-duty at the time.

McKenzie, who has been with the police force for two years, was released on a promise to appear. He is on administrative leave pending a review of his employment status, police said.
