Winnipeg trashes 'Garbage Day'

Garbage Day is a thing of the past, as city council has renamed it Recycling Day.

Council voted 8-6 to approve the name change, which is intended to encourage more people to use blue boxes and reduce the amount of trash in city landfills.

The vote followed a short debate that saw some councillors ridicule the name change as a waste of council's time.

North Kildonan Coun. Jeff Browaty, who voted in favour of the change, joked that the snow falling outside should lead Winnipeg to call today "Beach Day."
