Winnipeg won't look at how other cities deal with garbage, recycling

City council shot down a call to review how other Canadian cities manage garbage and recycling collection.

This morning, city council voted 10-5 against studying how other cities manage waste collection and what the options are for service. The initial call for a review came after councillors Harvey Smith (Daniel McIntyre) and Ross Eadie (Mynarski) said Winnipeg needs to see whether collection services could be brought back under the control of the public service.

Officials from CUPE Local 500, the city's largest union, have urged Winnipeg to audit its waste collection service to see whether it has saved money since it started to completely contract the service out in 2005. The union has argued it's best to have waste collection split 50/50 between the public and private sector.
