Winnipegger Welwood among finalists for Next Top Comic

  • Print

There’s a funny flatlander among the eight finalists for the title of SiriusXM’s Next Top Comic.

Winnipegger Jordan Welwood was one of three locals — along with Ben Walker and Scott Porteous — chosen for the contest’s field of 21 semifinalists after a laugh-off showdown last month at The Cheer Bar & Grill, which was part of a nationwide audition tour.

Based on online voting, Welwood and six others — plus one wild-card selection — were picked to take part in the final round of comedy competition, which will take place on Sept. 19 at Second City in Toronto.

The eight finalists will take the stage as openers for Saturday Night Live alumnus Colin Quinn at Just For Laughs’ JFL42 Festival. The show will be broadcast live on SiriusXM’s Canada Laughs, and the winner, chosen by a panel of all-star judges, will take home a cash prize of $15,000 and the title of SiriusXM’s Next Top Comic.

Past winners of the contest include Eric Andrews, Matt O’Brien and Brian Stollery.
