Winnipegger to cycle across Canada

Winnipegger and ultra-marathon cyclist Arvid Loewen aims to bust a Guinness World Record for cycling across Canada next month in order to raise money for street kids in Kenya.

Loewen will hit the road Canada Day, starting in Vancouver and racing to beat the standing record to cross the country by cycling in under 13 days, 9 hours and 6 minutes.

Loewen has peddled long distances for charity before, including a cross-country race from Vancouver to Winnipeg last year but this will be the longest undertaking yet for the 54-year-old cyclist.

Local business owners Frank and Agnes DeFehr will present Loewen with a $50,000 unsigned cheque in support of the Mully Children's Family charity Thursday with the promise to sign the cheque if Loewen succeeds in beating the record.

Loewen has been involved with the Kenya-based NGO since 2006.
