Winnipeggers' 'living flag' to appear on postage stamp

Because Winnipeggers gathered on a scorching summer day to become Canada’s largest living flag, they will have something to be proud of in the winter, too.

Canada Post selected the photo of the Canada Day Living Flag, which was taken by the Downtown BIZ, as a stamp to appear as part of the Canadian Pride series. The stamp will be released on Jan. 14, 2013. It will be part of five Permanent domestic rate stamps that point out places where the Canadian flag may be found – some obvious locations for a flag, and others, such as the Winnipeg legislative grounds, playing host to over 3,000 people standing shoulder to shoulder on one of the hottest days of summer, not so much.

In addition to earning a stamp, the Canada Day Living Flag earned Winnipeg the "Canada Day Largest Living Flag" title after the Winnipeg community handled considerable competition from Victoria, Langley, and Calgary like patriotic pros.

"With this stamp, our Living Flag photo will be seen by millions of people from all walks of life – putting our downtown on the map and showing to the world how much Winnipeggers care about their city," said Stefano Grande, Executive Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
