Winnipeggers remember 9/11 today

Eleven years ago today, the world changed.
Winnipeg will today mark the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States that led to subsequent retaliatory attacks, a rise in racism and antagonism towards Muslims, and heightened security measures that spread across the border to Canada.
Today at 11 a.m. at the legislative building ground near the fountain, Manitoba firefighters and peace officers will join together to "honour their fallen," according to a press release.
Also, it was 11 years ago today that Winnipegger Christine Egan went to visit her brother at the World Trade Center in New York.
The woman who dedicated her nursing career to caring for residents in Canada’s far north will be remembered Monday as one of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A plaque commemorating the death of Egan is on display at the University of Manitoba, in Brodie on the upper level outside Theatre A (Gaspard Theatre).
The National Association of Federal Retirees will host a reception at the Clarion Hotel at 6 p.m. at which it will honour its members who volunteered in the tragedy’s aftermath with a presentation to the Christine Egan Memorial Scholarship Fund.
