RCMP, military rescue men stranded on Lake Manitoba island

WINNIPEG - Ashern RCMP, with the assistance of a Canadian Air Force CC-130 Hercules, rescued a pair of Winnipeg residents stranded on Cherry Island on the weekend.

Friday afternoon, the two men left Steep Rock Beach on Lake Manitoba by boat to take food and camping gear to Cherry Island, usually a 25-minute ride away.

They did not return at the expected time to meet family members, who contacted police early Saturday to say the men were overdue by 18 hours.

Lake conditions became quite rough with high waves later on Friday.

The Air Force Hercules, dispatched from Trenton, Ont., located the missing boaters on the island and were able to drop a radio to them to establish communication.

RCMP learned that the men had mechanical problems with their boat and were stranded on the island, where there was no cellular phone coverage.

The men were rescued on Saturday afternoon without incident.
