Woman arrested in alleged scam with tricking homeowners

A woman who tricked homeowners to let her into their homes on the pretense of using their phones only to steal from them has been caught.

Winnipeg police said the suspect tried the scam again late Wednesday afternoon but this time was recognized.

Earlier Wednesday, police had issued a warning to the community about an aboriginal-looking woman who appealed to homeowners in the East Kildonan and Elmwood area, requesting to use their phone and then stealing from them when they were distracted.

Police said they were notified later Wednesday about a similar incident in the 500-block of Henderson, where a woman requested to use their phone.

Police said the occupants believed the woman fit the description released earlier in the day and they contacted police.

The suspect was located nearby in the 300-block of Sydney Avenue and taken into custody.

Cheyenne Leigh Bruce, 26, has been charged with theft under $5,000, breach of probation, and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance.

The investigation is continuing.

Bruce is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
