Woman hospitalized after group attack in park

WINNIPEG - Police have arrested several people after a woman was attacked and undressed in an inner-city park early Saturday morning.

The 34-year-old victim was walking through a park near Notre Dame Avenue and Sherbrook Street around 12:30 Saturday morning when she was approached by a group of males and females, police said.

The group surrounded the the woman, physically assaulted her and knocked her to the ground, then kicked and punched her about the head and body, police said.  Most of the group then walked away, leaving an 18-year-old man with the victim.

The man was undressing the victim and was attempting to sexually assault her when police, summoned by people who witnessed the assault, arrived on the scene.

Police officers, including the canine unit, tracked several suspects in the area.  Several people, including the 18-year-old man, were taken into custody. Police said they will be facing "a number of charges."

The victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition suffering from numerous injuries to her upper body. Her condition has since been upgraded to stable.
