Woman charged with attempted murder of husband granted bail
A Manitoba woman has been released from jail eight months after being accused of trying to kill her sleeping husband by filling the home with propane.
The 48-year-old — who is not being named to protect the identity of the alleged victim — was granted bail Friday afternoon by provincial court Judge Marvin Garfinkel.
The Crown was opposed to her release on charges of attempted murder and administering a noxious substance.
A court-ordered pan prevents specific details of the hearing from being published. The accused has been accepted into a local treatment program in Winnipeg where she will reside, under strict conditions, until her case is resolved. A preliminary hearing is set for next February.
Police arrested the woman in August 2011 after her common-law spouse awoke to a heavy smell of propane gas. The 52-year-old man found his wife and their pets had left the home in the rural municipality of Piney, and one of the family vehicles was missing, police said.
The smell of gas was coming from a stove in the home. The man caused a "small explosion" while trying to make the gas dissipate, RCMP said. He suffered injuries that did not require medical treatment.
