Woman dies, man presumed drowned in bizarre ATV crash

  • Print

BRANDON -- A woman is dead and a man is missing and presumed drowned after an ATV crash near the spillway of the Rivers reservoir over the weekend.

The incident occurred 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

RCMP say the 58-year-old Rivers woman was trying to drive an ATV down an embankment near the spillway, about 29 kilometres northwest of Brandon, when she lost control. The ATV hit a 39-year-old Brandon man who was fishing nearby, knocking him into the water, which swept him away.

The woman was killed in the crash; the man hasn't been found and police say he is presumed drowned. Search and rescue efforts continue, but police say the water had a significant current and the man hasn't been located.

Police say that it doesn't look like alcohol was a factor in the crash, and that they believe the woman was wearing a helmet.

They continue to investigate, but will not be releasing names of the victims.
