Woman dies after vehicle crashes into salon

A woman critically injured in a Saturday afternoon car crash has died.

Winnipeg police said this morning they were told the woman, identified as Kendall Wiebe, 27, died from her injuries.

The crash took place when a a 32-year-old driver of a 2012 Jeep Liberty -- driving northbound near Rouge Road and Allard Avenue -- lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle then went across Portage Avenue from Rouge Road at high speed and into the shopping centre’s parking lot, before smashing through an Ultracuts hair salon.

Wiebe worked at the hair salon. Another woman working with her there was taken to hospital in critical condition but her situation has been upgraded to stable.

The crash remains under investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash, police said. Police haven’t announced any charges in connection with the crash.

An Ultracuts employee at another Portage Avenue location said she couldn’t comment on the matter.

Police said drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

Gary Morris, owner of the Morris Insurance Brokers next to Ultracuts, is still trying understand the strange but tragic crash.

"It went through the front of Ultracuts, travelled (about nine metres), and then into our wall," said Morris, who added it then ended up in the rear of the insurance business where the bathroom and kitchen are located.

"If it was any other day of the week, the car came through the wall where I usually sit."

Morris was not present when the crash occurred. But he said he heard the vehicle came across from Rouge Road, south of Portage, before weaving through the parking lot and into the building.

The vehicle broke all the plumbing fixtures, flooding the insurance business.

Due to the damage, he said his business will be closed for the next few weeks.

Randa Stewart, spokeswoman for Assinboine Credit Union, said a trust fund has been set up in honour of Wiebe.

She couldn’t say where money donated to the fund is going.
