Pedestrian dies after collision with truck

WINNIPEG -- A woman has died after she was struck by a vehicle early this morning crossing the eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue near Strathcona Street.

Louisa Sala, 20, of Sanikiluaq Harbour, Nunavut, was transported to the hospital in unstable condition and has since succumbed to her injuries, police said in a release.

The investigation revealed that Sala had been walking in the roadway around 1:30 a.m. when she was struck by an eastbound pickup truck.

Police closed eastbounds lanes of Portage Avenue between Empress and Raglan during the rush hour this morning while investigators worked at the scene.

No charges have been laid against the truck's driver.
