Woman beaten while defending friend

A 27-year-old Winnipeg woman was beaten and injured after trying to come to the aid of a friend involved in a seemingly random robbery attack in the North End.

The incident took place shortly after midnight Saturday, when an argument broke out on Manitoba Avenue that soon turned violent.

Const. Jacqueline Chaput said a 28-year-old man was walking in the area with the woman when they got mixed up in a dispute with two men and a 20-year-old woman.

Initially, only two of the men became combative with each other, Chaput said, but things grew ugly after the woman tried to step in and prevent her friend from getting hurt.

The trio, armed with a bat, seriously assaulted both people. The victims required treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspects fled the area but were arrested the next day, Chaput said.

Adam Arthur Martin, 22, and Bradley Thomas Roulette, 19, are charged with aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, robbery and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Twenty-year-old Christina Murdock is charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection to the alleged beating of the woman.

Martin was also charged for giving police the false name of Adam Horvath.

Chaput said Murdock and Roulette were taken into custody where they remain.

While Martin was initially released by police, the charges against him appeared in court today.
