Your voice: Should marijuana be legalized?

Most Canadians are ready to legalize marijuana. How about you?

The Free Press wants your opinion.  Tell us why marijuana should or should not be legalized, and we'll publish a selection of the responses.

Email your opinions to city.desk@freepress.mb.ca with "marijuana" in the subject line.

The issue is being raised after an Angus Reid Public Opinion Poll released Thursday showed a majority of people in Canada and the U.S. believe cannabis should be readily available for those who want to use it.

In the online survey of more than 2,000 randomly selected adults who are forum panelists, a majority of Canadians (57%) and Americans (54%) supported the legalization of marijuana.

In Canada, men (64%) are more likely than women (50%) to call for the legalization of cannabis. And, in Canada, the bulk of support for legal marijuana comes from respondents aged 18-to-34 (61%).

The level of support for legalizing other drugs—such as crack cocaine, powder cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and crystal meth—stands at 11 per cent or lower in each country.

The margin of error is +/- 3.1% for both countries. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population.
