Zoo wants you to name new panda

Winnipeggers will get a chance to weigh in on the name for the zoo's new red panda cub.

In celebration of International Red Panda Day on Saturday, the public is being asked to vote on a choice of four names for the female cub born on June 30.

"We’re excited to have the public help us select a name for our red panda cub and can’t wait to see the results," Tim Sinclair-Smith, the zoo’s director of zoological operations, said in a statement today.

The four names to vote on are:

  • Zhin, which means treasure,
  • Kiah, which means from a beautiful place,
  • Anika, which means graceful or beautiful, and
  • Mya, which means emerald.

To vote, go to the zoo’s facebook site at www.facebook.com/assiniboineparkzoo until Monday at 9 p.m., or visit the zoo’s Toucan Ridge area to vote on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The chosen name will be announced after the vote closes.
