A million bucks to offset those holiday purchases

Winnipegger Sylvia Santos received a wonderful surprise during the holidays -- she scratched a lottery ticket and won a million bucks.

"I saw three $1-million amounts," she said. "I read the back a few times. I was debating if it was real."

PJ's Lucky Lotto sold Santos the $1-million Western Millions lottery ticket on Dec. 8, during its first week of operation. The lottery kiosk is located within the Safeway store on Jefferson Avenue at McPhillips Street.

Santos had stopped at the Safeway store for lunch and decided to pick up some lottery tickets.

"I almost didn't get it," Santos said with a laugh. "I wasn't planning on buying the (Player's Choice Mega Pack) pouch. In fact, I thought I was two dollars short, but I found it at the last minute."

Santos's parents had mixed reactions about whether the ticket was a winner.

"My mom said, 'No, they all have to be in a row.' But when I asked my dad, he said, 'No, I think you've got a winner,'" she said.

Santos's win was the second million-dollar winning ticket sold at a Safeway kiosk in Winnipeg this month. During the past 15 years, few Safeway stores have included lottery kiosks. But late this year Safeway decided to add more lottery kiosks in some stores.
