Lindsay Street incident now a homicide, police say

Police have confirmed a man assaulted at a home in River Heights early Monday morning has died.

The 25-year-old man had gone to hospital in critical condition after a fight broke out at a family gathering on Lindsay Street.

Police are expected to release information this morning about an arrest in the case.

Winnipeg police said the incident occurred at a residence in the 100 block of Lindsay at 2:10 a.m. Monday. A 25-year-old man suffering from serious upper-body injuries was taken to hospital.

Police Const. Jason Michalyshen said it appears there was a family gathering at the home when a confrontation occurred. Officers are still trying to determine whether the assault took place inside the home or outside on the street, he said.

Police cordoned off the front lawn of the two-storey home with yellow police tape and were at the scene throughout the day on Monday. An old chair, a red tool box and plastic debris were scattered near the home's front walk.

"It does appear people at the home knew each other. There are no indications this was a random act," Michalyshen said.

The home is owned by a Winnipeg couple who rent it to their daughter. They said she has lived in the home for about five years and phoned them to pick up her children from the scene shortly after 2 a.m.

"She called us quickly to say something happened," the woman's father said.

Area residents were stunned by the assault, saying a crime scene is a rare sight in River Heights.

"That would be a once-in-a-lifetime thing around here," said one woman, who wanted to remain anonymous.

The woman said her husband noticed police tape when he took out the trash Monday morning. She said she heard sirens early that morning, but didn't look outside to see what the commotion was about.

Denise Lavoie lives across the street and said she heard police sirens and assumed police had caught someone speeding. She said she was shocked to look out her window and see a cruiser car parked on a neighbouring lawn.

"It's not a very good feeling when it happens that close to home," Lavoie said. "That's a little creepy for me."
