Baby born in car alongside busy B.C. highway before couple reaches hospital
KAMLOOPS, B.C. - B.C.'s Coquihalla Highway is known for fast traffic, but it wasn't fast enough for a pregnant couple heading to hospital to deliver their second child.
Dan Bigelow and his wife Kay-Dee were driving from their home in Merritt to Kamloops early Monday when Kay-Dee's water broke in the middle of the trip and the baby began to emerge.
Bigelow stopped his car, called 911 and spoke to ambulance dispatcher Corey deDelley, who coached the dad through the roadside delivery.
"He saved the day," Bigelow said of deDelley. "Without him, I wouldn't have my little girl here and possibly not even my wife. He's a real hero for me."
DeDelley said Bigelow can take some of the credit because he followed directions well.
"When you have a great person on the other end of the phone that is listening to the directions and doing them verbatim, it's quite simple," he said.
Little Mikayla was born 10 minutes after deDelley began helping the dad, and mom and daughter are doing well.
The baby girl has a brother who turns five on Sunday, Mother's Day.
In April, a woman gave birth to her daughter on the sidewalk in front of her home in Vernon, B.C., after trying to get to the hospital.
Sara Channon asked her husband Jim to carry her to their car, but the pair had only made it down a set of stairs in front of their townhouse when their little girl revised their plans.
Sara's sister, Kyla Adams, a first-year nursing student, took over, helping deliver the baby while telling Jim to call 911.
Laces snatched from one of Sara's shoes were used to tie the umbilical cord and by the time firefighters and paramedics arrived all that was left to do was cut the cord and rush mom and baby to hospital.
