Council defeats reform of civic campaign financing

City council has defeated a motion that would have prevented corporations and unions from donating to civic election campaigns.

St. Boniface Coun. Dan Vandal and St. Norbert Coun. Justin Swandel wanted to end the practice of allowing union and corporate donations, as other political jurisdictions have done.

But a majority of councillors preferred to see the existing campaign rules remain.

The motion died by a margin of 11-5, as only Vandal, Swandel, Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge), John Orlikow (River Heights) and Lillian Thomas (Elmwood) supported the idea.

Disgusting. It's clear that the mayor and most councillors have little interest in democracy.

Remember this on election day folks! When Katz, Browaty, Fielding, Lazarenko, Smith, Wyatt, Pagtakhan, Nordman (especially Nordman) and Steeves knock on your door, ask them where they get THEIR contributions from and who they are REALLY supporting! And the Mayor has the nerve to say 'where was the consultation?'. As if he pays attention to what Winnipegers who don't own a business have to say
