Black Friday brings in the green

Cash registers were ringing up some eye-popping sales numbers on the weekend as local retailers offered their own sweet deals to keep Manitobans from heading south for the annual U.S. Black Friday shopping extravaganza.
"It was record sales," Paul England, associate dealer of the Canadian Tire store on St. James Street, said Monday. "And I can say that for every Canadian Tire store in Winnipeg. Double-digit increases every day for all of the stores."
Friday was a particularly busy day at the nearby Polo Park shopping centre.
"It was unbelievable. We're still sitting here with our mouths hanging open," mall manager Deborah Green said. "Traffic was up 60 per cent from a year ago on the same day.
Green said Saturday and Sunday weren't as hectic, but good days just the same.
"It was just a resounding success," she added.
Retailers were also whistling a merry tune at the Kildonan Place mall on Regent Avenue.
"We had a really great weekend, even though the weather wasn't all that great on Saturday," manager Peter Havens said.
Havens said retailer participation this year was much higher than last year, and that helped to draw more shoppers to the mall.
"I think some of them saw the success that some retailers had last year with Black Friday specials and tried to capitalize on that this year. And my expectation is that... we'll see an even bigger push (by retailers) next year."
A spokeswoman for Best Buy Canada said it was a banner weekend for their stores as well, including their two outlets in Winnipeg.
"This is the first year that Best Buy held a Black Friday sale and it was hugely successful," Danielle Jang said. "Our Winnipeg stores had roughly 40 to 50 customers waiting in line on Friday to get some of the great deals we were offering."
Jang said Best Buy's Cyber Monday sales event was to continue until 2 a.m. today, "so we are looking forward to seeing the results from this sales event, as well."
