Most actively traded companies on Canadian stock markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,752.90 up 467.83 points):

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up 66 cents, or 12.89 per cent, to $5.78 on--,040,202 shares. The transportation giant rebounded after sharp decline since mid-September. It ended talks late last week in buying a stake in Russian railway locomotive manufacturer Transmashholding due to a disagreement over the price of the deal.

Uranium One Inc. (TSX:UUU). Mining. Down 20 cents, or eight per cent, at $2.30 on 10,995,731 shares. The metals and mining sector led the rebound on the TSX, rising 7.59 per cent.

Eastern Platinum Ltd. (TSX:ELR). Up 24 cents, or 32.43 per cent, at 98 cents on 10,943,186 shares.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Down 25 cents, or 2.78 per cent, at $8.75 on 9,564,978 shares.

Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Up 98 cents, or 6.98 per cent, at $15.02 on 7,855,069 shares. The energy sector was one of the major advancers on the TSX due to a sharp gain on the near-month contract of crude oil at the New York Mercantile Exchange. The sector gained 5.80 per cent as oil closed up US$4.27.

Nortel Networks (TSX:NT). Telecom equipment. Unchanged at $2.34 on 7,807,123 shares. The Toronto-based firm slashed its business outlook two weeks ago plunging its stock to its all-time low.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,415 up 32.97 points):

Sultan Minerals Inc. (TSXV:SUL). Mining. Down 2.5 cents, or 38.46 per cent, at four cents on 7,553,000 shares.

Bayou Bend Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:BBP). Oil and gas. Down 1.5 cents, or 6.98 per cent, at 20 cents on 7,026,850 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

LAB Research Inc. (TSX:LRI). Drug company. Up half a cent, or 0.86 per cent, at $5.85 on 10,770 shares on news it has completed the first phase of a three-year, $40-million Canadian laboratory expansion ahead of schedule.

Teck Cominco Ltd.'s (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Up $1.30, or 4.50 per cent, at $30.22 on 4,639,989 shares. The firm's $10 billion takeover deal over Fording Canadian Coal Trust (TSX:FDG.UN) has received its final stamp of approval. Teck entered into definitive credit agreements for a US$4-billion senior term loan facility and a US$5.81-billion senior bridge loan facility.

Torstar Corp. (TSX:TS.B). Publishing. Up eight cents, or 0.70 per cent, at $11.50 on 80,125 shares after naming Donald Babick interim president of the Star Media group and publisher of the Toronto Star, replacing Jagoda Pike, who will head Ontario's bid for the 2015 Pan American Games.
