College student body suspends president

THE Red River College Students' Association has suspended president Garrett Meisner after he was charged with assaulting a police officer at a recent Occupy demonstration.

"He has been suspended from his position and we will be reviewing it at our board meeting in November," student association vice-president external Michael Santarsieri said Monday.

As first reported by the Projector student newspaper, Meisner was removed from his post Sept. 18, a day after he was charged. Santarsieri is the interim president.

Winnipeg police said at one point, police identified a man believed to be the leader of the illegal protest and arrested him. It's alleged a second man, who towered over the officers at the scene, then pushed and shoved an officer.

That second suspect later went into convulsions and received medical treatment.

Meisner did not respond to an email request Monday for an interview. The allegations against him have not been proven.
