Two Winnipeg women are dead after an SUV driver crossed a centre median -- an all-too-frequent occurrence lately on Manitoba roads -- and ran head-on into their car.
The women, a mother and her daughter, were killed Saturday at about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Gateway Road and Budden Drive in East Kildonan when the driver of a northbound Ford Explorer crossed into the southbound lane, slamming head-on into their Pontiac Grand Am.
The women inside the car, ages 23 and 42, were taken to hospital in critical condition, where they later died. The occupants of the SUV, a 28-year-old woman and 31-year-old man, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A resident in the area who ran out to try to help said the Pontiac "was flipped over on its roof and the driver side was caved right in."
"I heard a big 'kabang.' I went outside and told my wife to call 911," said the resident.
The resident, who has lived in the area for almost a decade, said Gateway Road is not known for a lot of collisions.
"It's just tragic that two girls lost their lives. You just knew as soon as they were taken out of the vehicle. They just worked on them and worked on them. They never gave up," he said.
Emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to extract at least one of the deceased, he said. The front ends of both vehicles were completely smashed in, he said.
The road was closed for several hours.
Vehicles crossing into oncoming traffic have become increasingly common.
-- On Sept. 6, a 35-year-old Edmonton woman was killed when two oncoming cars collided on Highway 16 near Gladstone.
-- On Aug. 24, near Brunkild, a 22-year-old Winnipeg man and a 48-year-old man from Hochfeld were killed after one car drifted into the oncoming lane, sideswiped another vehicle and then collided head-on with another.
-- On Aug. 6, a westbound minivan crossed the median ditch into an eastbound pickup truck on the Trans-Canada Highway near Portage la Prairie. The driver of the minivan died.
-- On July 22, a westbound semi-trailer truck crossed the centre line on the Trans-Canada in Headingley and killed the driver of a pickup truck.
