OPP officer under investigation after crash kills woman in custody

An Ontario Provincial Police officer is under investigation after a car crash near Kenora on Sunday led to the death of a 42-year-old woman in custody.

A Kenora OPP cruiser and a tractor-trailer collided at the junction of Highway 17A and Highway 658 at about 2 a.m. Sunday. The woman, a Kenora resident who was in OPP custody, was killed. Two OPP officers who were in the vehicle were taken to hospital in Kenora for treatment and have been released.

The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.

One officer is being investigated and four other officers will be involved as witnesses, said Monica Hudon, a special investigations unit spokeswoman, on Monday.

The crash probe, which includes forensic and collision-reconstruction investigators, will file a report to the unit’s director, who will decide whether any further action must be taken, Hudon said.

A post mortem report on the woman will be completed in the next day or two, Hudon said. The victim’s name has not been released.

The special investigations unit is a civilian agency of the Ontario government that investigates deaths, injuries and assaults involving law enforcement personnel in Ontario.

Investigators are asking any witnesses to the crash to come forward, especially a person or people in a dark-coloured pickup truck that may have witnessed the incident, Hudon said. The special investigations unit can be reached at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2293.
