'Devastating' fire kills person in mobile home

A deadly house fire northeast of Winnipeg in the RM of Springfield claimed the life of one person early Saturday morning.

Neighbours said the mobile home where two brothers lived burned down extremely fast.

"It's very devastating," said one nearby resident, who was awakened just after 1:30 a.m.

"We went outside and (said), 'Where's the mobile home?' It was burned to the ground already."

The home, on a stretch of Edgewood Road where there are a series of rural homes, was completely destroyed.

The brothers, described as in their late 30s or early 40s, are said to have lived in the home for about 10 years.

Only one person was believed to be in the home at the time of the fire. The RCMP have not yet identified who perished in the fire.

"The autopsy will take place Monday morning," said RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish today. "We won’t have an identification until after the autopsy."

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined, she said.
