Duran Duran announces that guitarist Andy Taylor has quit the band

LONDON (AP) - Duran Duran announced Thursday that guitarist Andy Taylor has quit the veteran rock group.

Duran Duran said Taylor quit last weekend but that its remaining four members - Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John and Roger Taylor - plan to carry on recording and performing as a group.

"We have reached a point in our relationship with him where there is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together," the band said in a statement on its official website, www.duranduran.com.

It apologized to fans for not making the announcement sooner, saying it realized that speculation had been running high about Taylor's future with Duran Duran.

The group, which is led by Le Bon, was a big act in the'80s but later faded from popularity before regrouping five years ago.

"Although obviously disappointed and saddened about this, we are excited about the next chapter of the Duran Duran story and look forward to seeing you all soon," the statement said.

The band was scheduled to give a concert Thursday in Chicago.
