Flu emergency declared in New York

NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state health emergency Saturday because of a flu epidemic that has sickened more than 19,000 people, giving pharmacists the right to immunize infants and children in hopes of curbing the spread of the potentially lethal virus.

In New York state, 19,128 cases have been confirmed, compared with 4,404 for the previous 2011-12 flu season.

"We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, ," Cuomo said in a statement.
