Friendly faces support club on Texas swing

LAREDO, Texas -- When the Winnipeg Goldeyes looked next to their visitors dugout in both Amarillo and Laredo, they were welcomed by two faces from home.
Brenda Arnott and Myrtle Trottier, dedicated Goldeyes fans who met and became friends at a Winnipeg ballpark 10 years ago, travelled in Myrtle's car from Winnipeg to Texas for the Goldeyes' nine-game road trip with the next stop in El Paso for games today, Friday and Saturday.
"When the Goldeyes were in the Northern League, I had been to every ballpark they played in," Arnott said.
"And now that they're in the American Association -- and thank goodness that Myrtle drives because I don't -- so over the next few years I hope to hit every new ballpark they play in the American Association."
Trottier retired at the end of January as an administrator in an accounting firm while Brenda has been retired from her position with Canada Revenue Agency for 21/2 years, so the two can travel when they want.
"I just enjoy travelling and it's a lot of fun to see the different ballparks," Trottier said. "I got started with the fan club when they do bus trips. We're planning on taking one (bus trip) to Kansas City-Sioux City (July 31-Aug. 5).
"They (the players) really appreciate it when they see fans come. So many of them came over and thanked us for coming and told us it was nice to see us," Trottier said.
Arnott wears a vintage No. 35 Walter Young jersey, circa 2007 when Young wielded a big stick for the Goldeyes, to each game.
Catcher Luis Alen and shortstop Price Kendall made a special point of coming over to talk when they first spotted them in Amarillo.
"Every game back home, Luis, after he warms up the pitcher on the field, he always comes over, stops, gets on one knee and kisses my hand," said Arnott, who also recently retired from being vice-president of the Goldeyes Fan Club she helped found. "It's like a pre-game routine now."
At Shaw Park, the ladies sit in section F -- Trottier in Row 19 and Arnott in Row 1 with her husband.
"I haven't missed a home game in over nine years," Arnott said.
Arnott said a standing joke in her family is that a few years back she didn't want to miss the game the day her brother Darren got married.
So she went to the church and dinner before bolting for the ballpark.
"I don't think that last bite hit my stomach and I was out the door," she said with a laugh, adding she returned to the reception after the game was over.
