Goldeyes win another league attendance title
THE Winnipeg Goldeyes had another successful season at the gate to go with their American Association championship.
Fans of the Fish packed Shaw Park at a league-leading rate with an average attendance of 5,705. The Goldeyes also finished second overall in average attendance among 49 independent professional baseball teams. Only the expansion Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League in their brand new ballpark drew more fans per game than the Goldeyes.
"Once again we continue to be supported by the best fans in minor league baseball," said Goldeyes GM Andrew Collier. "The American Association has 12 other strong franchises. To lead the league in attendance again is an accomplishment everyone in Winnipeg can celebrate."
The Goldeyes drew 285,620 fans for 50 home games in 2012, the third straight season the team has increased its total attendance. It was the highest total attendance figure since the 2007 season.
In the playoffs, Winnipeg posted an average attendance of 5,342 in three home games.
Clark, Demski honoured
U OF M Bisons football players Cam Clark and Nic Demski garnered national recognition on Wednesday.
Clark, who threw for 442 yards in the Bisons' 51-38 home win over Alberta on Saturday, was named CIS player of the week on offence while Demski, who returned a missed field goal for 98 yards in the victory, was named special teams star of the week.
Manitoba (3-1) travels to Regina this week for a second-place showdown in Canada West as they play the Rams (3-1) on Friday at 8 p.m. The game be heard live on 101.5 UMFM (www.umfm.com) with pre-game show starting at 7:45 p.m.
